Lando Norris narrowly beat team-mate and championship contender Oscar Piastri for the quickest lap in the final moments of practice at the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Norris, who seized the title advantage from Piastri by a single point after taking the win in Mexico City a fortnight back, topped the Melbourne-born driver by 0.023 seconds.

Earlier in the session, Oscar Piastri had been the fastest McLaren driver for most of the session before the sprint shootout scheduled for the evening session.

The Red Bull star, the other racer in the championship fight, sitting with a 36-point deficit behind Norris, ended up in 17th position as his Red Bull team ran a unique setup.

His teammate the Japanese driver was the sole competitor to go off, albeit lightly, when he lost control at corner four soon after starting.

Tsunoda spun out over the track edges before sliding over the escape zone, and was lucky to avoid just a minor contact of the wall.

Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton also spun, at the very end of the practice, turning around through the fast downhill corner before the final bend on to the main straight.

Hamilton wrapped up in 19th place, trailing teammate the Monegasque driver.

The McLaren drivers were significantly quicker of the other competitors, with Nico Hulkenberg's Sauber in third, over half a second slower than the Australian's time.

Aston Martin's the Spanish driver was in fourth, with Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto in front of the Mercedes of Russell and Alpine's Gasly and Williams' Carlos Sainz.
